Six Sheets Curling Center
Many ask, what's in the name?
3, Minnesota is known as 'Land of 10,000 Lakes' and sailing is a popular summer pastime on our larger lakes. This is not the reason for its name, but it did influence our logo design.
4. Six Sheet's Curling Center's open play and unobstructed view is possible due to the massive steel girders spanning its entire width. Its impressive design resembles the platform created at Port Cargill, located in Savage along the Minnesota River, to build gasoline tankers for the U.S. Navy during WWII. The initial contract was to build 'six'. |
Port Cargill was one of several plants set up by the military during World War II. There were 'six' yards in the area, and together they produced more than 230 ships for service.
Six Sheets Curling Center's name and logo eres influenced by those reasons listed above. It is primarily intended as a tribute to our city's rich and prideful, and largely unknown nautical history, specifically its contribution to WWII shipbuilding efforts. The ships built here at Port Cargill had long and colorful careers.
